OWLware and the Online Accessibility Project

With the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA), companies and businesses within the province now require enhanced customer service standards. One section of the act requires businesses to train staff about how to interact and communicate with people with various disabilities, for instance persons that require a guide dog, a support person, or have hearing loss, etc.

OWLware Ltd. is a service provider for the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), located within North York. OWLware helps make the transition into gainful employment by matching people facing barriers to the right job, offering them valuable work experience in the areas of customer service, internet research, data entry, marketing and web assembly, through their innovative work adjustment programs.

There are a number of organizations, companies and agencies still unfamiliar with AODA and what changes they will need to implement to their customer service practices. OWLware has been working to help enable that transition with their expertise in internet applications. The OWLware Online Abilities Project provides services to all individuals with disabilities and other persons facing barriers to employment. The project enables websites so that they are accessible for persons with disabilities. For example, enabling the text on the website to increase in size, or the colour and contrast to change for visually impaired persons. OWLware uses a software program to evaluate any website, enabling their production team to then utilize their software application to build a web accessible version of a company website.

The many innovative initiatives OWLware and their Accessibility Project provides, allows for work adjustment opportunities that help both employers and potential employees work together towards fulfilling the AODA requirements. OWLware Ltd. stands by their adage that “organizations who invest in people with disabilities are seen as employers of choice.”
